Joy fills our hearts as Maltese Capuchins! Not only do we celebrate the election of Pope Leo XIV, but we also rejoice in the ordination of our youngest Capuchin brother as a deacon. After an intense week immersed in all the Chapter-related activities and emotions, we found ourselves looking forward to another joyous milestone – Br. Ryan becomes Fr. Ryan! (Of course, even after ordination, we still remain brothers.)
And so, surrounded by his family and friends, on Saturday morning, May 3rd, we gathered at Our Lady of Grace Parish Church in Żabbar to share this beautiful moment of grace.
Together with the multitude of joy, this ordination brought three main reflections to mind: (i) The Formation Journey, (ii) The Emotional and Spiritual Impact, and (iii) The Future Ahead.

The Formation Journey
The ordination of a brother first reminds us of the long years of formation. Becoming a deacon is no quick process – it requires deep discernment and extensive training in personal, intellectual, and charismatic (Franciscan) growth. It is the fruit of both the individual’s calling and the congregation’s affirmation. For Capuchins, this journey usually spans eight to nine years before reaching the Diaconate.
Put simply, a deacon is a living sacramental sign of Christ, who came to serve. His ministry revolves around three core areas: the Word, the Sacraments, and Charity. A deacon proclaims the Gospel, preaches, baptizes, witnesses marriages, leads prayer services, and serves the needy. His ministry is not defined merely by his actions but by who he is – a servant at the heart of a serving Church.
The Emotional and Spiritual Impact
To say this celebration was a joyful occasion would be an understatement! After an intense week of discussions and elections, it was a much-needed celebration – one filled with immense hope!
In today’s world, where vocations are scarce, witnessing a young man dedicate himself fully to Christ and His Church is a profound and inspiring testament that God still calls (and people still answer!). The emotional and spiritual impact of this moment resonated deeply, offering a powerful jab of hope to everyone present.

The Future Ahead
To all this however, a sobering reality dawned upon us – in the Maltese Capuchin province, there is currently no one in formation after Fr. Ryan. This means we won’t experience another Capuchin diaconate ordination for at least the next eight years (and that’s only if someone joins today!).
This realisation compels us to reflect even more deeply on our mission – on what it means to be Church, to be Capuchins, in today’s world.
A Call to Prayer and Reflection
As we bask in the joy of yet another hopeful celebration, we ask you to continue to pray for us. Pray for the gift of discernment. Pray for more vocations. And pray that we understand our mission more profoundly.
Together, let us continue to trust in the One who calls – and intercede for those called, to answer courageously.
