The Way of Beauty for St Francis

Truth, Goodness, & Beauty

are the three transcendentals of God, each existing in perfect harmony with the others.

After his conversion, St Francis of Assisi sought to discover the source of this Beauty, from whom all aesthetic beauty flows. He encountered this Beauty most profoundly on Mount La Verna, where he received the stigmata, a sign that revealed to him with clarity that Jesus Christ is the Beautiful One. From this mystical experience, St Francis composed the hymn The Canticle of the Creatures, a song of praise for all creation.

In light of this, during these two days of catechesis, we shall explore how Franciscan spirituality today is called to be a prophetic witness to Beauty, and how, through art and the Capuchin charism, we may transcend mere aesthetic beauty in order to deepen our encounter with the Beautiful One in our lives.
