Suret il-Bniedem Foundation
Rooted in the Franciscan charism of humility and minority, Suret il-Bniedem Foundation exemplifies the Capuchin Friars’ mission to serve those on the periphery of society. Inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi’s deep reverence for the humility of Christ, the Foundation was established to address the pressing issue of homelessness in Malta, offering not only shelter but also dignity, hope, and a renewed path in life.
The foundation was established 25 years ago but its mission had been started a few years earlier by Fr Leopoldo Tabone, a Capuchin friar who felt deep concern for the poor, the marginalised and homeless individuals. The contrast between his own having a bed and shelter and the reality of others experiencing homelessness deeply disturbed him. As a chaplain at the Corradino Correctional Facility he had noticed that some ex-detainees were ending up homeless upon their release from the Facility. Despite his advanced age, but motivated by his belief in God’s grace for the outcast, he turned a house in Fgura into a ‘Welcome Home’, a shelter providing dignity, hope, and opportunities for these individuals.
What started off as a modest initiative quickly grew into a structured ministry. In its early years, the Foundation became a lifeline for men who had nowhere to go, providing them with shelter, meals, and a supportive community. Over time, the mission expanded to include not only emergency care but also long-term support. The friars, together with lay volunteers and employed staff, worked tirelessly to create spaces of healing and transformation.
Today, the Foundation embodies this legacy of care, offering holistic residential services that include psychosocial support, personal development opportunities, and pathways to employment. Its homes are more than just shelters—they are sanctuaries where individuals can rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society with a renewed sense of purpose and dignity. Suret il-Bniedem operates five homes, providing shelter and support to homeless individuals and families. Two homes welcome individuals facing rooflessness as a result of a variety of social problems, while the other three homes welcome individuals who face homelessness primarily due to mental health challenges.
Guided by compassion, solidarity, and justice, Suret il-Bniedem Foundation remains committed to addressing the root causes of homelessness while adapting to the evolving needs of those it serves. By shining a light on the humanity of the most marginalised, this ministry continues to embody the Franciscan spirit, reminding us all of the transformative power of humility in action.
Prison Chaplaincy
Following their founder, the Capuchin brothers strive to bring hope and light to those who often feel forgotten by society. One other ministry, in which the brothers do exactly this, is the chaplaincy within the Corradino Correctional Facility. Here the ministry is not about grand gestures but simple acts of presence—offering a listening ear, a kind word, and spiritual guidance.
Serving in the prison is a continuation of the Franciscan mission to be instruments of peace and mercy. Behind the Facility’s walls are individuals burdened by regret, loneliness, and despair. Rather than judging the inmates, the Capuchin friar walks alongside them, sharing in their struggles and joys, and reminding them of their inherent dignity as children of God.
On a daily basis, the Capuchin brothers celebrate mass, spend time in the various divisions where inmates reside, and offer a listening ear when requested. During regular visits, the Chaplains listen to the inmates’ stories, encouraging them to see themselves not as defined by their mistakes but as loved and valued by God. Their presence brings comfort during times when inmates feel the weight of separation from their families. Small gestures, such as sharing sweets or a meal, create moments of connection and humanity, reminding them—and the chaplains themselves—of the dignity inherent in every person.
The ministry at the Corradino Correctional Facility affirms the power of hope and redemption. By supporting and encouraging inmates’ initiatives, chaplains strive to remind them of their worth. Whether through crafting a sacred altar or embracing personal growth, these efforts are tangible signs that no one is beyond God’s love.
Police Chaplaincy
The Capuchins’ ministry extends to the police force, where they serve as chaplains, providing spiritual and emotional guidance to members—as well as their families—, facing the daily challenges of upholding law and order. Inspired by the Gospel, the friars offer a listening ear, celebrate the sacraments and provide spiritual formation, accompany couples in preparation for their marriage, and works at fostering a spirit of fraternity among the members of the police community.
The Capuchins’ presence within the police force is a reminder of the Church’s gratitude for the service of law enforcement personnel and a source of solace in times of stress, uncertainty, or grief. Their commitment to this ministry demonstrates their dedication to peace and justice, fostering a sense of community and support within the police force. By offering a holistic approach to spiritual care, they ensure that officers receive the guidance and encouragement needed to navigate the complexities of their roles.
