Bringing Christ’s comfort to the sick through presence and prayer

MINISTRIES

SAMOC

At the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre (SAMOC), the Franciscan Capuchins embody their charism of simplicity, fraternity, and compassionate service. They complement the hospital’s cutting-edge oncology care with spiritual and emotional support.

Drawing inspiration from the Gospel and the life of St. Francis, the Capuchins bring a profound contemplative presence to the wards, rooted in prayer and humility. Their ministry includes offering pastoral care, administering sacraments, and providing a comforting presence to patients and families facing the challenges of cancer treatment or end-of-life care. Guided by their values of minority and fraternity, they embrace each person they encounter as a brother or sister in Christ, fostering an environment of trust, dignity, and hope.

In the Palliative Care Ward, the Capuchins’ mission shines especially bright, as they journey with patients in their final moments, offering spiritual solace and reassuring families through shared faith. Their work also extends to supporting healthcare staff, nurturing resilience, and helping to maintain a sense of purpose amidst the demanding nature of oncology care.

Through their life of prayer, simplicity, and service, the Capuchin brothers ensure that SAMOC’s vision of holistic, compassionate care is met and deeply enriched with God’s love and mercy.

Mt Carmel Hospital

At Mount Carmel Hospital, the Capuchin brothers embody their charism of simplicity, of fraternity, and compassionate service to individuals grappling with mental health challenges. Guided by the Gospel and the example of St. Francis—in particular in his service to the lepers—, they bring spiritual and pastoral support to complement the hospital’s professional care. Their comforting presence, rooted in prayer and compassion, offers solace to patients, fostering an environment where the vulnerable feel seen, valued, and supported.

The Capuchins journey alongside patients, families, and staff, cultivating a sense of dignity, hope, and belonging. Their ministry extends beyond administering the sacraments; they also offer one-on-one pastoral care and encouragement for those navigating the complexities of mental illness. Through humility and kindness, the friars create a safe space where individuals can find spiritual guidance and emotional support in times of need.

At Mount Carmel Hospital, their dedication to providing holistic care is evident in their collaboration with medical professionals. In their pastoral visits to the hospital, the friars together with lay volunteers, offer individual counselling and spiritual guidance. By fostering an environment of empathy and support, they help patients navigate their mental health challenges and find comfort in their faith.

Mtarfa Home

Rooted in the Franciscan Capuchin spirit of simplicity, compassion, and fraternity, the Capuchin brothers also serve the elderly residents at Mtarfa Home. Following the example of St. Francis, who embraced the sick and the vulnerable with love, the friars offer not only the daily celebration of the Eucharist but also their presence—walking alongside the residents in their joys and struggles. Through regular visits, heartfelt conversations, and spiritual accompaniment, they seek to bring comfort, hope, and a sense of family to those in their care. Their ministry is one of presence, reminding each person of their dignity and the love of God that never fades with age.
