The past week has been an eventful and deeply meaningful time for us Capuchins in Malta, as we gathered at our Friary in Floriana to celebrate the 71st Provincial Chapter of the Maltese Capuchin Province. Over five days, we engaged in reflection, prayer, elections, and discussions, all in the true spirit of Franciscan fraternity.
The Provincial Chapter, held every three years, is a special moment to pause, giving us an opportunity to look back and look ahead. During the Chapter we take time to reflect on the past three years – celebrating the journey, revisiting previous decisions, acknowledging challenges and limitations, appreciating our strengths, and finally, discerning ways forward.
A central part of the Chapter is the election of the Provincial Minister and Council, who will be entrusted with the responsibility of leadership as we embark on the next three years. This year, Fr. Ivan Scicluna was reconfirmed as the Provincial Minister for the coming three years (having already served one term in this role). The brothers present then elected the following brothers to the Provincial Council: Br. Miguel Zammit (Provincial Vicar), Fr. Elmar Pace, Fr. Mark Scicluna and Fr. Jethro Bajada.

As we move forward, we have taken important steps in discerning the future of our province, carefully considering the best ways to respond to our mission in the Maltese context of the 21st century. Building upon the vision of past years, we discussed various paths that will help us remain true to our Franciscan calling in today’s world.
Beyond the formalities, the Chapter is ultimately a time of fraternity and renewal. It is a moment when brothers from different fraternities come together to reconnect – sharing coffee breaks and meals, exchanging thoughts and hopes. This week was filled with heartfelt conversations, meaningful exchanges, and joyous laughter, all of which strengthen the bonds of fraternity that St. Francis so deeply cherished.
What a week indeed! We remain ever grateful for your prayers and support throughout this time. As we continue to seek a deeper understanding of how we are called to serve, we humbly ask you to keep us in your prayers. May these cherished days continue to inspire us all to walk together in hope, love, and humble service.
